The city of Biysk in the Altai Territory is one of 6 cities in Russia and the only one beyond the Urals, founded by order of Emperor Peter the Great as an outpost, which had an important military and strategic importance. It happened in 1709. At the end of the XIX - the beginning of the XX c.. Biysk becomes a major trade and merchant center in southern Siberia, trading with England, France and Germany.
By decision of the government on November 21, 2005 Biysk was given a status of science city of the Russian Federation.
Biysk is a member of the Union of Historic Cities of the Russian Federation. It has 272 monuments of architecture, history and culture, about 50 monuments of archeology, 11 monuments of nature. Through its territory in the III millennium BC passed through the northern branch of the Great Silk Road. Paleolithic site of ancient man was opened here in the beginning of the XX century.
The legendary Chuysky tract starts from Biysk. Since it was officially granted the status of the road of national importance in 1922, almost all export-import relations between Russia and Mongolia are carried out through this city. Biysk is the gateway of the Altai Mountains, from which all the mountain tourist routes begin. Through Biysk annually travels more than 2 million tourists. The roads to the world-famous Lake Teletskoye, Mount Belukha, the resorts of Chemal and Belokurikha, and the Ukok Plateau run from here.
