Webcam online Greetsiel. Port
Gretziel is a small but very pleasant resort town and fishing port in German Ostfriesland on the border with the Netherlands.
The specific climate of the North Sea meant that people built dwellings a few kilometers from the sea, in areas protected from wind and floods by dikes. The settlements were connected to the sea by locks and canals that served as harbors for fishing boats. Harbors of this type in Ostfriesia are called "Zil".
Accordingly, the name of the settlement can be translated as Greta's Harbor. Greta was probably the ancestor of the Zirksen family that ruled in Ostfriesia. In Gretzila until the 19th century there was an ancestral castle of Counts Zirksen. Few old buildings have survived in Gretzila, among them the church and the hotel "High House".
Today not only fishing trawlers, but also pleasure yachts of various types are moored along the zile. And along the seafront there are many hotels, cafes and restaurants.
