The city of Lomonosov belongs to the Leningrad Oblast, but is not part of it. It received its modern name in the middle of the XX century. Today it is an interesting Russian tourist destination.
Lomonosov, the sights of which are monuments devoted to various events in its rich history, was founded in the early 18th century as a country residence of Count Menshikov. At that time it was called Oranienbaum.
The residence got its name (according to one version of historians) due to the fact that on its territory, in numerous greenhouses, Prince Alexander Danilovich grew plants with citrus fruits - Pomerantz trees. Their name in Latin is consonant with the word Oranienbaum. In the summer of 1780 (almost 70 years after its foundation) the place was given town status.
At that time, the residence was owned by Peter III and his wife, Empress Catherine II. The city got its present name in the postwar years of the last century. The choice of the name of the famous Russian scientist was not made by chance.
At 25 kilometers from the center of the city is a village, where, a few centuries before the renaming, Mikhail Vasilyevich organized a factory for the production and processing of colored glass.
Today, on the territory of Lomonosov, with a total area of 35 km², constantly more than 42.5 thousand people live there. The city was decorated with the Order of World War I and has the honorary title "City of Military Glory". The coat of arms of Lomonosov depicts a Pomeranian tree. The most famous native of Oranienbaum is composer Igor Stravinsky.
In September 2011 as part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of Oranienbaum held a grand opening of the city park. Lomonosov and the fountain "Oranienbaum.
"The Field of Fools" (this was the name of a piece of land in the center of Lomonosov, unorganized and swampy, overgrown with bulrush from World War II) became a remarkable city park of the 300th anniversary of Oranienbaum. The gift to the city was a wonderful fountain and improvement of the town square.
