Once an industrial town that produced most of Bulgaria's textiles, carpets and clothing, Gabrovo has transformed since the change of government and has become popular with tourists due to its comfortable hotels, stores, cafes and quick access to many local attractions and activities.
This town has two museums, several historical churches, monuments and bridges over the river Yantra, which enjoy the attention of tourists. Recently, Gabrovo has won one of the biggest awards in the national sociological poll "The best city in Bulgaria". The town has won the nomination "The greenest town" and received the second prize in the contest for the "People's Choice".
Gabrovo was originally a community that used the Yantra River as a source of energy for mills and water wheels. Because of this Gabrovo is the longest city in Bulgaria, as it stretches along the river, the source of which is in the north of the Balkan Mountains.
