Saransk is located in eastern Central Russia and has been the capital of the Republic of Mordovia since its founding. The city occupies both sides of the Insar River and has an area of just over 81 square kilometers.
Modern Saransk has three main administrative districts - Oktyabrsky, Leninsky and Proletarsky. The central district of Saransk is Leninsky. It includes the main part of the city center, there is a housing estate "Oktyabrsky", bus station "Lesnaya", the junnatov station and famous all over the country Saransk Electric Lamp Factory. It is also a cultural center of Mordovia, because most educational institutions, museums, cinemas, theaters, exhibition halls, libraries, stadiums and parks are located in Leninsky district.
The youngest district is Oktyabrsky. The local economy is represented by four large construction companies and industrial enterprises producing furniture and medical equipment. Proletarsky district is the largest in terms of area, already by 1985 its population exceeded 100 thousand people. In terms of economy, Proletarsky district is the most important part of the city, it has about 80 all kinds of enterprises (factories, trusts, plants and production associations).
