The seaport of Sochi has been attracting tourists from all over the world for decades. Up until the 1930s, Sochi had no seaport, despite the fact that the city is located on the shores of the Black Sea. Everything changed when Stalin started a huge all-Union construction project on the territory of Sochi. At that time came the construction of the leader's dacha, health resorts, a tower on Mount Akhun and medical center. Construction of Sochi seaport began in the 1930s, when, by order of Stalin's pier on piles 200 meters long was built. In 1934, was formed Sochi Marine Administration, which became involved in the development of local and cruise passenger traffic.
The port was established by order of the People's Commissariat of Water Transport on April 11, 1934 ¹ 125. Already in the postwar years foreign cruise ships began entering the port of Sochi. At the end of 1955 there was an opening ceremony of the Marine Passenger Terminal. The building was designed by architects L. B. Karl'dik and K. S. Alabyan in the "Stalin Empire" style, famous for its tower of 74 meters high with a shining spire of 38 meters. V. I. Ingal is a talented master whose sculptures decorate the tower.
On the first tier there are four five-meter female statues, which symbolize the four seasons. On the second level there are 4 three-meter high male statues, representing the four cardinal points: east, south, west and north. At the bottom of the spire there is a place for 12 frisking dolphins, which symbolize the 12 months of the year, when the port of Sochi serves ships and receives passengers. There is a colonnade along the whole building from the embankment.
In 2006, began extensive preparations for the resort to participate in the Olympic Games in 2014. In this regard, began reconstruction of the Sochi port - passenger docks and expansion of the cruise terminal. Works carried out as part of the reconstruction have expanded the ability to receive cruise ships. In those years for the Olympics was built southern breakwater, which protects the water area of the port and the ships moored at the pier from storm waves.
The port's new marine cruise terminal can handle up to 1,200 passengers per hour. The passenger berths can now accommodate several cruise ships of up to 300 meters in length and 8.80 meters in draft at the same time. The ferry pier can accommodate a passenger ferry of 135 meters in length and up to 6.5 meters in draft, and the number of passengers has also increased. After the reconstruction of the administrative building of the port, there is a shopping center, an exhibition center and a restaurant.
