Castellabate is a seaside resort town in the Campania region, part of the club "The most beautiful small towns in Italy".
Castellabate is famous for its "role" in the film comedy "Welcome to the South" by Luc Mignero, which was released in 2010. The funny and hilarious adventures of the film's characters take place in the natural setting of the town of Castellabate, the film reveals not only the medieval beauty of the city, but also the hospitable and carefree nature of the inhabitants of southern Italy.
In fact, Castellabate consists of two parts: the medieval borgo located on the top of the hill and the coastal area characterized by clean water and sandy beaches.
The town received its name from the fortress (Castello) Abbata (Abbate), erected in the XI century to protect against Saracen pirates.
Now located in the fortress is the City Museum, where you can see the hall of the Normans, the ancient finds, and walk through the underground passage connecting the towers of the castle. Once the underground part was very extensive, it included living quarters, bakeries, cisterns for water. All this was done in case of a Saracen attack.
The coast of Castellabate is 19 km long. It is variegated and heterogeneous, with steep cliffs alternating with charming coves and golden beaches.
