Tsarskoe Selo is associated with many memories of the heyday and sunset of the Romanov dynasty. Tsarskoe Selo is located 25 kilometers south of the center of St. Petersburg. It's a small town with two enormous palaces, surrounded by parks. The luxurious Catherine Palace is the favorite residence of Catherine the Great, and the last royal couple lived in the Alexander Palace. Tsarskoe Selo is associated with the memory of the great poet Alexander Pushkin, who studied at the Tsarskoe Selo Lyceum. In Tsarskoe Selo often visited and Rasputin, here was buried and his ashes.
Lenin had also been here several times before the revolution.
Tsarskoe Selo in pre-revolutionary times was a model city, which introduced the advanced achievements of science and technology. From Tsarskoe Selo to St. Petersburg and Pavlovsk stretched the first railway line in Russia (built for the convenience of the imperial family). The city was provided with electricity, water supply and sewerage. A scaled-down copy of St. Petersburg's Gostiny Dvor was built, as well as numerous villas. After the revolution, these villas were turned into orphanages, and the town was appropriately named "Detskoe Selo".
In 1937 the town was named "Pushkin" to commemorate the centenary of the poet's death. Now the palace complex is once again called Tsarskoe Selo, and many of the streets have regained their old names. However, the city itself is still called "Pushkin. During the occupation (from September 1941 to January 1944), the Nazis looted the palaces, and in the entire city was left not a single house, suitable for habitation. When the Nazis were driven away, the first window pane was inserted in the window of Pushkin's room at the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum.
After decades of restoration work, both castles look as they did before the war, but many pavilions are still not restored, as this requires considerable effort and a lot of money. Every June, two festivals take place at Tsarskoye Selo. During the one-day Tsarskoye Selo Carnival, an elaborate procession passes through the streets of the city. And during the music festival, operettas and chamber concerts are given in the throne room of the Catherine Palace.
