Ulyanovsk, which bore the name of Simbirsk until 1924, began its history in 1648. Then voivode Bogdan Khitrovo, executing the Tsar's decree, began construction of a wooden fortress between the Volga and Sviyaga rivers. The citadel successfully coped with the protection of the southern borders of Russia from the raids of nomadic tribes, and withstood a siege by the troops of Stepan Razin.
The policy grew and in 1780 received provincial status.
