Saransk, the capital of the Republic of Mordovia, is located on gentle hills cut by the valleys of the Insar and Saranka rivers. This city has a colorful biography. Founded more than 350 years ago, it served as a fortress, protecting the borders of the state, witnessed the peasant and Cossack uprisings that shook the country. Then Saransk turned into a backwater district, but today it is a modern city, a political and cultural center of a large multinational region.
Over the last decade Saransk has improved, not least of all thanks to the fact that it was decided to hold a number of matches of the FIFA World Cup 2018. The Mordovian capital has improved transport and sports infrastructure, a five-star hotel, modern entertainment centers and restaurants appeared, and many old buildings have been restored. The city seems to have become younger and more well-kept.
Although it is worth saying that Saransk has always been clean and tidy. Perhaps it is not for nothing that a monument to the janitor is placed in one of the city streets.
In Saransk is preserved very few historical monuments, but the rest deserve to be seen. The city has several theaters, cinemas. There are many museums here, two of which - the Art Museum and the Museum of Local Lore - are famous for their collections of exhibits far beyond Mordovia.
