The city of Biysk is the administrative center of Altai Krai. It is a science city. It is the second largest city in the region. Biysk is also an industrial center.

It is located on the southeast side of the Biya River. The geographical terrain here is predominantly flat meadowland, and also on the high mountain plateau. The eastern part of the city is adjacent to the pine forests. The city is divided into right-bank and left-bank parts, united by a bridge (there are three bridges across the Biya River in the length of the city).
The city is the beginning of the Chui highway, which leads across the region to the border with Mongolia.

Street named after Grigory Vasilyev, Hero of the Soviet Union, is one of the busiest streets in Science City-Biysk. This is a busy street, on it a continuous flow of streetcars, buses, cars, carrying workers to the leading enterprises of the city. Pupils and teachers are rushing to school, parents are taking their kids to kindergartens.
The citizens live and work proud of their heroic street and its history. At first this street was called Shkolnaya, and in May 1965 by decision of Biysk City Executive Committee was renamed the street of the Hero of the Soviet Union Grigory Vasilyev.

Grigory Semenovich was born on September 25, 1897 in the village Efremkino, Ufa Province of the Russian Empire. From peasants. In his village he graduated from an elementary school. Since childhood he dreamed of becoming a soldier.

He joined the Red Army in 1918, participated in the Civil War from 1918 to 1933 Grigory Semenovich longed for knowledge, wanted to learn more about the tactics of war, so he studied at the Supreme Combined Military School. His dream came true - he became a professional soldier. In 1929 he distinguished himself with courage in fights with the Chinese on the Chinese Eastern Railway.

In 1934 he was sent to the Frunze Military Academy. Graduated from Frunze Military Academy with excellent knowledge of military affairs and tactics of warfare. After graduating from the Academy he was sent to the military garrison in the Far East, where he participated in the battles against the Japanese militarists at Lake Hasan and on the Khalkhin-Gol River.

For further service he received an order from the command to be transferred to the Biysk military unit. Here he was engaged in very responsible work - formation and preparation of military units for the Red Army.
The Great Patriotic War broke out, and in September 1941 Vasilyev was drafted into the active army. As an excellent military specialist he led the formation of the 232nd Sumsko-Kiev Rifle Division. In a short period of formation the command staff and fighters showed excellent results in combat and political training.

In spring of 1942 I went to Voronezh front as a commander of 605th infantry regiment. It was the year of the bloody defensive battles. With his courage and boldness Grigory Semenovich inspired the fighters, was the first to rush into battle.
