In 264 BC. Fermo was colonized by the Roman Empire, from 401 it was under the dominion of the Ostrogoths, then of the Lombards, and later became part of the feudal Duchy of Spoleta. In the X century, Fermo became the capital of the "Marca Fermana" (La Marca Fermana), in the XII century it was given the status of a free commune, then a totalitarian signoria.
In the XV century the city came under the rule of the Dukes of Milan Sforza, and from 1538 to 1870 was part of the theocratic Papal States. An interesting fact is that one of the representatives of the Sforza dynasty, Galeazzo Maria, was born in Fermo. During his reign there were direct contacts between Italian and Russian lands, Italian architects traveled to Moscow and took part in the construction of the Kremlin and other architectural sites.
