Szczecinek is located in the eastern part of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. Historically it was part of Western Pomerania. In 2010 the borders of the city were extended, as the city was merged with the following villages in the Szczecinek commune: Halowo, Marcelyn, Godzimierz, Turowo, Parsencko, Buczek and Żultnica.

In the Middle Ages there was a Slavic fortress on the territory of present Szczecinek. It was part of the early Polish state in the 10th century, and as a result of the fragmentation of Poland in the 12th century, it became part of the separate principality of Pomerania. In 1310 the castle on the site of the former citadel and the city were founded by Duke Wartislav IV of Pomerania on the model of Szczecin, which is located about 150 kilometers to the west.

The original name was "Neustettin". It was also known as "Klein Stettin". In 1707 the town was known as "Nowoczczecin" in Polish, and the name Small Szczecin gradually changed to the modern name Szczecinek.
