Webcam Varna. Galata Panoramic Site
One of the main natural attractions of the Bulgarian city of Varna and its symbol is Cape Galata. It is located in a picturesque place on the Black Sea coast - four kilometers from Lake Varna in the northeastern part of the Avrhenka Plateau. Cape Galata is located near the city district of the same name, as well as near the beaches of Pasha dere and Ficosa.
It is surrounded by fields and a dense deciduous forest, and at its foot there is a small clean beach, sometimes covered with pebbles and sometimes with sand.
The name of the cape in Varna has something to do with the famous and beautiful legend of Galatea. The legend says that Polyphemus fell in love with the beautiful Galatea from time immemorial. But Galatea did not reciprocate her feelings and rejected them. The reason for this was the young shepherd Achidas, who had fallen in love with her. Then a furious Polyphemus stood in wait for the lovers, ripped off a block of rock and threw it on the rival. The blood that flowed from under the rock was turned into a river by Galatea.
Cape Galata in Varna, among other things, is known for the lighthouse located on it. The lighthouse is today one of the main and most important navigational sites along the entire Bulgarian coast. The very first lighthouse on the cape was commissioned in the summer of 1863. Later, in 1912, a new lighthouse was built within a hundred meters from the old one. Thanks to the light of its lantern, many seagoing ships safely entered the port. The annals of the lighthouse bear witness to the fact that the lights of Galata Cape in Varna brought back hope to the desperate sailors battling the furious sea or to those who were shipwrecked. There are also many legends about the sea battles that took place near that part of the Bulgarian coast and about the saving rays from the lighthouse at the cape.
In 1968, not far from the lighthouses opened a restaurant called Galatea. Everyone who had been there at least once claimed that this place could justly be called the most romantic place in town. Moreover, the restaurant had an amazing view of the sea and city beaches. Unfortunately, in 1998 landslides caused the collapse of the structures, and the restaurant did not survive to this day. But the stunning panoramic views from the lighthouse can be admired even now.
In 2001, the work of the second lighthouse was suspended because of the landslide risk and the third lighthouse at Galata Cape in Varna was built next to it. This modern structure is 22 meters high and is equipped with an elevator.
