One of the smallest towns in Bulgaria is Melnik. The history of this settlement goes back to antiquity. It was founded as a small fortress back in the era of Roman rule. However, it reached its peak during the Byzantine era, when it fought the Bulgarian and Serbian kingdoms.
Before the Turkish conquest, Melnik was a bargaining chip in the struggle of strong states on the Balkans for the right to own land. The invasion of the Ottomans turned the economically developed city into a small settlement.
Only after the liberation of Melnik from the Turkish rule did the second flowering of the city begin. The most important object of production and trade was wine, one of the best in Bulgaria. Now Melnik is a dynamically developing resort with many attractions and rich history.
