Larissa is the largest city of Thessaly, whose name means "seagull" in ancient Greek. The city is ideal for summer holidays, but for most tourists Larissa is the starting point for excursions to the many architectural and historical monuments that are nearby.
However, in Larissa itself there is a lot to see - ancient mansions, fountains with moldings and sculptures, medieval castles immersed in the greenery, neighborhoods with preserved Byzantine and Ottoman heritage - all this is captured in the original culture of the city. Developed infrastructure offers tourists a wide range of luxurious expensive hotels, as well as small budget hotels.
All Greek cities are sure to have someone who has played an important role in world history. So Larissa is not an exception. This city is the birthplace of the mythical hero Achilles and the father of modern medicine - Hippocrates.
On the territory of the city you can visit the Archaeological Museum, which presents a rich collection of artifacts from the Paleolithic era, and the Art Gallery of Larissa, which has a unique collection of modern Greek paintings.
On the outskirts of the city lies the First Antique Theater, which had a capacity for 10,000 spectators and was built in the third century B.C. In Larissa, you'll also find many temples with elaborate frescoes, such as the Christian church of St. Achilles, built in the VI century in honor of the metropolitan Achilles - the patron saint of the city.
You can also visit the Bezesteni market, a covered market that was built in the 15th century, or look at the medieval fortress and park Alkazar, one of the most beautiful parks in Greece.
