Webcam Trikala. Asclepius Bridge
The city of Trikala is located in the northwestern part of Thessaly, in the center of Greece. Under the name of Trikki the settlement was known even in the time of Homer. According to ancient Greek myths, this polis was the birthplace of the greatest healer of antiquity, Asclepius, who for his services was inducted into Olympus. In addition to him, several Argonauts were born in the city.
At different times, the city and its surroundings belonged to different states. They were the Romans, the Byzantines, the Crusaders and even the Serbs. Like all Balkan lands Trikki in XV century was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and became the center of Rumelia province. Until 1881 the city was part of Turkey, but after the Berlin Congress the territory passed to Greece. During the First Greek-Turkish War, Trikala was occupied by the Turks again for six months, but was soon repulsed and finally became part of the Greek state.
During World War II, the puppet Principality of Pindus and Meglen was formed in Greece under the rule of Fascist Italy and Bulgaria, and a people's assembly of that state was convened in Trikala.
In Trikkale there are many interesting monuments of antiquity. Among them take a special place the ruins of the ancient sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius.
Judging by the data of archaeology, in ancient times there was something resembling modern diagnostic hospitals. In addition to the sanctuary there is an ancient fortress in Trikale, which traces its history back to ancient times. Over the years, different rulers of the city strengthened the fortress walls, which had a positive impact on their safety. There is also a very good ethnographic museum. In addition, in Trikale are many old buildings, a mosque and an interesting metal bridge of the late XIX century.
