Artyom is located in the south of Primorsky Krai, 38 kilometers northeast of its capital, Vladivostok, in the valley of the Knevichanka River. It is the center of Artemovsky urban district. The area of the city is 506.4 square kilometers.
Artem was founded as a worker's settlement in 1924, due to the discovery of a brown coal deposit, and fourteen years later it was given city status. The city received its name in honor of the revolutionary Fedor Andreevich Sergeyev. Artem was his party nickname. At one time the town was called Zybunny. Coal mining in the city was completed in 2000. The city is home to the Vladivostok airport and a hydroelectric power plant. Also in Soviet times, there were factories producing knitwear and musical instruments.
Until 2004, the villages Krolevtsy, Surazhevka, Knevichi, Yasnoye, Oleniy, and urban-type settlements Zavodskoy, Artyomovskiy and Uglovoye were under the city administration. After that, the settlements became part of Artem.
