Kopeysk is a medium-sized city in the Chelyabinsk region, located on the shore of Kurlady Lake, 15 kilometers from the regional center.
The area of the settlement is 236 square kilometers.

The first documentary mention of the settlement Tugaykul on the site of the modern city dates back to 1810.

In 1832 on the Miass River near the village of Ilyinsky coal deposits, which belonged to the Chelyabinsk coal mines were discovered.

In 1907 the first coal mine called "Ekaterina" was opened. In early 1925 by order of the country's authorities, workers of the Chelyabinsk coal mines were awarded the Order of the Red Banner.

In 1933 the coal mines settlement was given the status of a town of regional subordination and was named Kopeysk. Two years later the city was given the status of a regional subordination.

In the 1930's in Kopeysk were opened parks and recreation and Cultural Center of coal miners.
During the Great Patriotic War the machine plant named after S.M. Kirov and the Voronezh State Drama Theatre were evacuated to the city. At that time the factories of the city produced a variety of shells, mines, bombs and components for the "Katyusha".

In the postwar years began a large-scale construction of residential and office buildings. In 1948 there were 18 clubs, two cultural centers and 15 libraries in Kopeysk.
In 1960s new schools and a museum of local lore were opened. In the 1970s, new neighborhoods with typical high-rise buildings were built, and amusements were added to the public park.

In 2004, Kopeysk included several settlements: Bazhovo, Zheleznodorozhny, Vakhrushevo, Potanino, Oktyabrsky and Starokamyshinsk.
