Genoa, which has always carried the epithet "magnificent", is located on the northwest coast of Italy, in the heart of the picturesque region, for over a century and a half known to tourists around the world as the "Italian Riviera". The city, built on the seaside cliffs, descends its narrow streets to the beautiful safe harbor. For more than 2,500 years it defined the development of Genoa, making it the largest port of the state. Literally made of marble, with an incredible number of monuments of architecture and art, countless museums, Genoa struggles to get out of the shadow of its more famous Italian neighbors - Rome, Venice and Florence. And every year this wonderful city more and more convincingly manages to prove that it deserves it.
Charming view to Genoa opens from the ship: it looks like it grows out of the sea, reminding with its appearance interior of a beautiful theater, where the stalls are noisy, never sleeping port, and the boxes are elegant palaces, remembering the Middle Ages. The heart of Genoa beats in the Old City, which occupies as much as 4 km² and is considered the largest in Europe.
For a long time, the Old City was neglected and in the pages of the Italian press, it was mentioned mainly because of the problems that plagued it - the sanitary condition and the increasing number of migrants from North Africa and Asian countries. The Genoese left their apartments in the old houses with no amenities and a solid wall of narrow streets and alleys (carrugi). Migrants both legally and illegally settled in their empty dwellings, which almost never saw the sun's rays through their windows.
They regarded these apartments as temporary shelters, not caring about them at all. The fact that the Old City of Genoa keeps architectural masterpieces and museum riches, Italians remembered, it seems, only in 1992, declared the year of Christopher Columbus, who is believed to have been born here. For this date in the city built interesting tourist facilities, conducted a restoration of many architectural monuments. In 2006 the quarters with the old palaces of the Genoese nobility were included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
But Genoa boasts not only stunning marble palaces. In the western and eastern parts of the city stretches magnificent parks, where in the shade of cedars, seaside pines, palm trees, olive trees can enjoy peace and quiet. In the peripheral areas to the west and east are not bad beaches with clean sea water. But still, tourists who are counting on a quality beach holiday, should head either further west of Genoa, where up to the French border stretches Riviera di Ponente, or to the east, on the Riviera di Levante.
Genoa has long been famous for its seafaring taverns and excellent cuisine with dishes that can only be tasted here.
