Modern Yelets is an industrial and cultural center. The second largest and most important city in the Lipetsk Region occupies an area of 70.67 square kilometers, located on the Bystraya Sosna River (the right tributary of the Don River), 77 km from Lipetsk, 350 km from Moscow. The city has a permanent population of over 103 thousand people.
Pushkin Square was opened on the 100th anniversary of the poet's death in 1937 and was a sculptural portrait. In the spring 1979 in the park appeared a modern monument to Pushkin (Sculptor B.I.Dyuzhev, architect A.A.Shashin).
