Known since the 18th century as a village Pitkyaranda (Karelian ranta, randa - "shore", pitkä - "long") on the eastern shore of Lake Ladoga, the Russian words for toponym were also used - "Long Beach". Since 1940 it's called Pitkyaranta town.

This settlement was first mentioned as a village on the Dolgoye Bereg at Lake Ladoga in 1499, in the census book of the Vodskoy Pyatina of the Novgorod Land. Initially the village was a part of grounds of Nikolsko-Serdobol pogost as it was situated on the way from Veliky Novgorod to Serdobol town. The settlement of Novgorodians, at the place of founding Pitkyaranta today, consisted of 3 homesteads, where about 30 people permanently lived, supplying the Novgorod trade route.
After the Winter war in 1940 the eastern part of Vyborg gubernia was given to the Soviet Union according to the Moscow peace treaty. The northern part of the new territory was included into Karelian ASSR, which was transformed into Karelian-Finnish SSR. In July 1940 was divided into districts - among others Pitkyaranta district was created with administrative center in Salmi.

The town was given a status of a town on July 9 1940. During the Soviet-Finnish War 1941-1944 Finnish troops occupied the town again, but had to leave it in August 1944.
In December 28, 1966 Pitkäranta district was restored. Nowadays it consists of four rural and Pitkäranta town settlements (the town with the villages of Yularistoja, Uuksu, Koirinoja).
