Webcam Rhinos in the Arignar Anna Zoological Park
The Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai (Madras), the first in India, was founded in 1885 and was located in the city itself. In 1976, the city authorities decided to move the zoo outside the city, to the Vandalur Reserve, as the animals were suffering from noise, air pollution and limited space. In 1985 the zoo reopened to the public.
It is one of the largest zoos in southeast Asia, with an area of 602 hectares. It contains about 1500 wild animals of different species, 46 of them - rare. Elephants, lions, tigers, giraffes, crocodiles, monkeys, deer, hippos, over 170 species of snakes and birds live here in their natural habitat. Visitors can ride through the zoo on open-air buses or bicycles that can be rented.
