Webcam Yelizovo. Zavoyko Street (Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky)
Not far from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (32 km) is the town of Yelizovo. It is the center of the Yelizovsky District and the main transportation hub of Kamchatka. Located in its vicinity, the eponymous international airport is the first thing that sees all those arriving on the peninsula, because there is only air communication with the mainland. In terms of population, Yelizovo ranks second after the capital of the region.
At the beginning of the XIX century in Stariy Ostrog built a hut where a family of Russian settlers began to live.
From this hut and started the eponymous village. Statistics of the mid XIX century already shows the presence of four houses. They were all occupied by members of the same family, the father lived in one house and the rest were occupied by his sons with their wives and children. As people arrived on Kamchatka from mainland Russia, the village grew. By 1876 there were already more than 80 people, and in the twenties of the twentieth century, 226.
Stary Ostrog (or Staroostrozhnoye) kept its name till 1897 when it was renamed into Zavoyko village in honor of the first governor-general of Kamchatka, a man remarkable in every way. It would be fair to keep this name, but during the Civil War dramatic events took place on Kamchatka. There were bloody fights for the Soviet power on the bank of the Avacha River, and the detachment of red partisans was headed by Georgy Yelizov. He was killed. To perpetuate his memory, in 1924, the village of Zavoyko was renamed Yelizovo. Later, a bust to the guerrilla commander was placed there.
The status of Yelizovo changed in 1964, it was called a workers' settlement, and in 1975, it became a town.
Fishing industry enterprises remain the main branch of the local economy, and there is agriculture as well. Tourism, which has already become a significant part of the district's income, is rapidly developing. Yelizovo is located in a beautiful place, where there are all the opportunities for a variety of recreation.
