Velikie Luki is a city in the Pskov Oblast in Northwest Russia. It spreads along the banks of the Lovat River, 313 kilometers southeast of the regional center. It consists of several districts. In 2015, the city had 95.6 thousand residents.
Velikie Luki is an ancient Russian city, founded in 1166. For many centuries it was part of the frontier defensive fortress line and was one of the most important gathering points for military units. During the Great Patriotic War the city was turned into ruins, many valuable historical and architectural monuments were lost. At present Velikie Luki operates restored in 1998 Holy Ascension Cathedral and miraculously preserved Kazan Church of the XIX century, a new church is being built in the Northern neighborhood.
The main tourist attraction is the Velikoluksk fortress of the early 18th century, of which only a rampart and the foundation of the Church of the Ascension are left. The town's image is adorned by several monuments to Soviet soldiers who liberated the town in 1941-1943. Velikie Luki is an important commercial, industrial, cultural and educational center of the Pskov region. The city has theaters, museums, modern shopping centers and entertainment venues. Every year here are held: International Aeronautics Festival, regional competitions in cycling, motocross, archery and rally.
