Forster is a coastal town in northern New South Wales, Australia. It is adjacent to its twin sister, Tankery, the smaller of the two cities. It is located about 308 kilometers north-northeast of Sydney.
Australians often refer to the city as Forster-Tankarri because of the proximity of the two neighboring cities, separated only by a bridge.
The most popular beaches are Forster Main Beach and Wan Mile Beach, which are maintained by Forster and Cape Hawke Surf, respectively Rescue Club. Pebble Beach is popular with local surfers.
The town was founded in 1869 and named Minimbah, but a year later it was renamed after the then Prime Minister William Foster.
Lumber extraction and processing, shipbuilding and fishing were the main sources of income in those early harsh years. And a little later, in 1884, the first oyster farm opened here. Now Foster is a major supplier of Sydney Rock oysters.
