Maksim Gorky Street is one of the central streets of Saratov. It passes through four Saratov districts: Oktyabrsky, Frunzensky, Volzhsky, Kirovsky, from 53rd Rifle Division Street to Bolshaya Sadovaya Street. It crosses the very center of Saratov, the Theater Square.
The street was formed in the general plan of Saratov in 1811.
In 1803 the Saratov nobility decided to build a hospital. Saratov residents began collecting donations. Emperor Alexander I approved the initiative and made a contribution. The funds raised were used to build the Alexander Zemstvo Hospital (now the V.I. Razumovsky City Clinical Hospital № 2). From the hospital to the central part of the city was laid a street, which was named "Alexander Street. Until 1924 the street was called Alexandrovskaya, in 1924-36 years it was called Co-operative.
On February, 27, 1939, by decision of the presidium of the Regional Council of Workers' Deputies, the street was named after Gorky.
