Park Avenue is one of the main thoroughfares that cross Manhattan from north to south. It was built in the early 19th century on the site of the old Bowery Alley called Fourth Avenue. In its current form, it is a boulevard with plantings of begonias. Parallel to Park Avenue are Madison Avenue (west, i.e. closer to Fifth Avenue) and Lexington Avenue (east, i.e. closer to Third Avenue).
