Murmansk is the administrative center of Murmansk region, one of the largest Russian ports and the largest city in the world, which is located above the Arctic Circle. Historians note that the word "Murman" in Scandinavian languages means "northern man," that is, Murmansk is a city of northern people.

In 1915, on the shores of the Barents Sea was founded Murmansk Sea Port and the port village Semenovsky, which marked the beginning of the construction of Murmansk. The official date of the founding of the city is October 4, 1916, when the city was named Romanov-on-Murman, and six months later was renamed Murmansk.

Initially, the city was important to Russia as an outlet to the Arctic Ocean, the possibility of developing maritime trade, military communications with the Allies. Therefore, in the early 20th century, the city began to develop rapidly.
During World War II, Murmansk was repeatedly attacked from the ground and from the air, as it was extremely important for the Nazi command to capture one of the main seaports of the rival. In terms of quantity and density of bombing among Soviet cities, Murmansk was second only to Stalingrad, where three-quarters of the city's buildings were destroyed in Nazi air raids. However, Murmansk was never surrendered to the enemy.

After World War II, the city was rebuilt virtually from scratch. Housing estates, industrial enterprises, infrastructure and cultural institutions were built.
