In Finnish "suo" means marsh and "yarvi" means lake. The city of Suoyarvi is the administrative center of the Suoyarvi District of the Republic of Karelia. Population in Suojärvi is 9800 people. The area justifies its name, the lakes occupy about 130 thousand hectares (9% of the territory), swamps - 341 thousand hectares (25%). The town is situated in the south of Karelia, 137 km from Petrozavodsk. This is a railway hub, and the center of the woodworking industry in the Republic of Karelia.
