Webcam Ermoupolis. Seaport
Hermoupolis or Hermoupolis is a town on the eastern side of the Greek island of Syros, the administrative center of Syros-Hermoupolis community and the periphery of the South Aegean islands. It is a shipyard, a center of resort tourism and the main port of the island. It is named after Hermes, god of commerce; the name means "city of Hermes".
Hermopolis was founded during the Greek Revolution (1820s) to accommodate migrants from the islands, which remained under the control of the Porte. Until the end of the 19th century it remained the largest center of Greek shipbuilding.
Ermoupolis has traditionally served as the commercial, industrial (shipbuilding) and cultural center of the former nome of the Cyclades.
It is home to a branch of the Aegean University. According to the 2011 census the population was 11,407 inhabitants.
Ermoupolis has a year-round daily shipping service to Piraeus, all other Cyclades, the islands of Dodecanese, Chios, Lesbos and Samos. In the summer months there are connections to Heraklion on Crete and also to Thessaloniki in northern Greece.
Among the places of interest are the square of King Otto (now named after Admiral Miaoulis), the theater of Apollo (1862-64, arch. Pietro Sampo), the classicist cathedral of St. Nicholas (1849-70), where the icon "Assumption" by the great Greek artist Theotokopoulos can be seen.
