The extremely popular resort of Palma Nova and its closest neighbor, Magaluf, form the largest tourist complex in the municipality of Calvia. Palma Nova is located on the southwestern coast of Mallorca, about 15 km west of Palma and the international airport of Sant Joan.
Although Palma Nova is considered less lively than Magaluf, this resort is quite large with a rich selection of hotels and apartments, restaurants, bars and stores.
It is considered the most popular among tourists coming from all over Europe, including many Spanish and British retirees who like to vacation here in the quieter months when the influx of tourists is not so intense.
Throughout the cultural development and rise of the Palma area, a place called Palma Nova remained an inconspicuous fishing village. It was not until the early 1900s that Europeans discovered the beauty of Mallorca's beaches and were enchanted by its rich heritage.
The history of Palmanova began in 1935, when officials decided to turn the fishing village into a developed resort area. When construction first began, a civil war broke out in Spain. It put an end to all reconstruction in Palma Nova until the 1950s, when the country returned to normal life.
The first hotels in Palma Nova were built in the late 1950s, including the famous Platia and Moroco hotels. The 1960s were a period of real boom for Spanish beach tourism and Palma Nova was at its epicenter. Three beaches and proximity to the capital made it one of the most popular vacation destinations in Europe. To date, this trend has continued. Palma Nova is a laid-back vacation alternative to the kind of rowdy fun and parties that take place on the neighboring beaches of Megaluf.
Palma Nova Beach (Blue Flag) is located in the heart of the resort and is a colossal size: over 1 kilometer long and 60 meters deep. The beach has also been improved with imported sand, which has proved very useful. There is plenty of free space for families, and there are small playgrounds at the back of the beach. This part is probably best suited for beach games.
