The southern Polish city of Gliwice is located within the Upper Silesian agglomeration of cities - the largest cluster of cities in Poland, its largest industrial and transport hub.
Gliwice is a city that is almost entirely urban, together with Katowice, Zabrze, Zorzów and other industrial centers. It is in this area that most of Poland's coal production is concentrated: over 50 mines.

Nowadays, Gliwice is the second important center of manufacturing industry in the Upper Silesian agglomeration, after Katowice.

Immediately adjacent to Gliwice are the Sosnica-Makoszowy coal deposits and mines. The presence of a large coal deposit here contributed to the emergence of iron, engineering and chemical companies in the city. Food industry enterprises were focused primarily on supplying a large number of workers employed in the town's factories. The most famous of them is the auto assembly plant of the American company General Motors.

Gliwice is also an important railway junction and river port on the Gliwice Canal. The Gliwice River Port has a cargo turnover of about 2 million tons per year, and through the Gliwice Canal, the port connects with the Odra River, the network of German canals and the Baltic Sea.

The Silesian University of Technology is the scientific and educational center of the entire Gliwice region.
