Petrozavodsk is a city in northwest Russia, the capital of the Republic of Karelia. The city is nestled on the shore of Lake Onega (the second largest lake in Europe). Through a system of rivers and canals, Petrozavodsk has access to the Baltic, White, Barents, Caspian and Black Sea, which makes it a port of five seas.

The city is located relatively close to St. Petersburg (about 400 km) and the Finnish border (about 350 km). Petrozavodsk has transport links with other major cities by road, air, rail and water. The area of the city is 135 sq. km.
The city was founded in 1703, and its construction began with a weapons factory, founded by Peter I (hence the name of the city).

Now Petrozavodsk is actively developing as a tourist center. Thanks to the proximity of the Finnish border, interesting places in Karelia (Kizhi Island, Valaam Island and others), the number of tourists increases annually. Large industrial enterprises (such as Onega Tractor Plant, Mica Factory or Brick Factory) mostly do not function for 10-20 years or even do not exist. According to the city administration's website, 148 enterprises are now operating in the city.
