Irkutsk - a city in eastern Siberia, the administrative center of the Irkutsk region. It was founded in 1661. Situated in the valley of the Angara River, at the confluence of its two tributaries - the Irkut and Ushakovka, 55 km from Lake Baikal. Irkutsk is an economic, transport, cultural and scientific center of Eastern Siberia with over 600 thousand people.
It is listed as a historical settlement of Russia, the historic center of the city is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Through the city passes through the Trans-Siberian Railway and the federal highway "Baikal". There are a river port and international airport.
The city is located where the Irkut River flows into the Angara River (hence its name). In the vicinity of Irkutsk, the Angara River has wide floodplain valleys (terraces) with uplands. Most of the residential areas, mostly in the city center, are located on one of these terraces.
