The city of Fatima, one of the famous centers of Christian pilgrimage, is located in the district of Santarén, Portugal. The ancient settlement founded by the Arabs was named after a Moorish princess. The city was called Oriana for a while after the Portuguese conquest. But over time it was renamed again as Fatima.
Today the Portuguese city is a famous center of Christian pilgrimage. It gained its popularity after the "apparition" of the Virgin Mary to three local shepherd children, who were supposedly given three secrets. Over time, the image of the Virgin has been seen more than once, and many residents of Fatima have witnessed the events.
These stories drew many people to the city. Fatima now bears little resemblance to the small, unremarkable community it was nearly 100 years ago. A flood of pilgrims rushed into the area. To accommodate them, the second half of the 20th century saw the construction of hotels, a hospital, and shelters for the infirm and the sick.
