Krasnoyarsk is a Russian city, the capital of the Krasnoyarsk region, located on both banks of the Yenisei River.
The city was founded in 1628 between the rivers Kachi and Yenisei as a military fortification. Built stockaded town was called Krasny, later Krasny Yar. Krasnoyarsk received the status of city in 1690.
Since 1822 Krasnoyarsk is a center of Yenisei province. During tsarist times Krasnoyarsk was a place of political exile. Eight Decembrists were exiled to Krasnoyarsk. On March 28, 1899 a railway bridge over the Yenisei was built. In 1900 an exact model of the bridge was exhibited at the world exhibition in Paris, where along with the Eiffel Tower the bridge received a Grand Prix and a gold medal.
The Soviet power was established in the city on January 4, 1920. Under Soviet rule there was a sharp growth of industry. During the Great Patriotic War many enterprises were evacuated to the city and new industrial giants were built. In the city operates about 15 major hospitals. Through Krasnoyarsk runs a highway Alaska-Siberia, which ferry planes from the U.S. and Siberia aircraft factories.
In the postwar years continued the development of industry and science. In the 1960s the construction of the Krasnoyarsk Akademgorodok began. In 1995 the construction of the metro began. The approximate date of commissioning the first segment of the first line - 2014. Modern Krasnoyarsk continues its active development.
In 2000, the zoo "Royev Ruchey" was opened, one of the largest zoos in Russia.
By Presidential Decree of May 20, 2021 the city was awarded the title "City of Labor Valor.
