Nazarovo is an urban district, located 220 km west of the regional capital at the intersection of the railway Achinsk - Abakan and the river Chulym. In close proximity to Nazarovo there is a lignite deposit of the Kansk-Achinsk coal basin. The freeway Achinsk - Uzhur - Troitskoe, which has an exit to the federal highway M-54 "Yenisei" and M-53 "Baikal" passes through the city. Trans-Siberian Railway runs 36 km north of Nazarov. There are 8,793 hectares of land within the administrative boundaries of the city. According to Krasnoyarskstat as of January 1, 2014, the population of the city is 51,437 people.
The village of Nazarovskaya was founded in 1700. Nazariy Patyukov, who built a house on the bank of the Chulym River near the mouth of the river Adadym. In 1786, according to P.-S. Pallas, in the village lived 15 families. In 1830-1840 the village Nazarovskoye consisted of 37 households of state peasants numbering 308 souls. Residents were mostly engaged in farming. Peasants sowed winter and spring rye, wheat, oats, and barley.
In 1924 the village became a district center. During this period, craftsmanship and consumer cooperation began to develop, various artels were created. In 1925, the first artels started coal mining. In 1927, the village had 416 households and 1,852 people.
In 1961 the Nazarovo village was given the status of a town of regional subordination. This event was preceded by a discussion about the name of the future city, which was supposed to be named Chulymsky. However, the city still retained its former name, Nazarovo. When the town was formed, it had a population of 36,300 people, 167,900 square meters of housing, kindergartens, nurseries, and schools. The leading enterprises of the city were 14.
Nowadays the basis of the city economy is still formed by the industrial complex: manufacturing industries, mining, production and distribution of electricity, gas and water. The city's enterprises produce electricity, lignite, steel and reinforced concrete structures, crushed stone, and foodstuffs. The city's city-forming enterprises are the Nazarovskaya GRES and the Nazarovsky open-pit mine. Small and medium-sized businesses are successfully developing. Entrepreneurs are mainly engaged in automobile transportation, baking of bakery products, rendering of services.
