The foundation of the city of Sarajevo dates back to 1244, until 1507 it was called Vrhbosna. The city is located at a height of 500 meters above the sea. Sarajevo is a cultural and industrial center of the country. Here is situated the Academy of Sciences and Arts, University, Art Gallery, Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in addition - numerous industrial enterprises.
Since Butmirskaya Neolithic culture times, i.e. since period of 2600-2400 B.C., there were settlements on the Sarajevo place all the time. Around 1263 in Bosnia, on the southwest side of the town of Visoko, the Slavic fortified settlement of Vrhbosna, whose name was derived from the Bosna River, was established. The Ottoman Turks captured Vrhbosna in 1429. In the fifties of the 15th century, Isa Beg Isakovic, the first pasha of the province of Bosnia, united several villages into one town, which became the administrative center of the province. A mosque, a public bathhouse, a covered market, an inn, and the governor's house, called the word "barn" (which in Turkic means house, palace), were built.
It was founded as an Ottoman town in 1461 with the name Bosna-Saray. The city was later renamed Saray-Ova, from which the modern name of the city derives.
In 1640, Sarajevo was subjected to an earthquake. In 1644 and 1656 it was badly damaged by fires. During the Austro-Turkish War, Eugene of Savoy, commander of the army of the Holy Roman Empire, fighting against the Ottomans, caused the city to be almost completely destroyed. The Sultan's governor moved his residence here in 1850.
Between 1878 and 1918, the city was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. On June 28, 1914, the famous Sarajevo assassination took place, which was later used as an excuse to start World War I. The 19-year-old Gavrila Princip, a member of the Serbian revolutionary youth organization Mlada Bosna, murdered Franz Ferdinand, Archduke, heir to the Austrian throne, who had arrived in the city to observe military maneuvers and open a museum.
In 1984, the city of Sarajevo was the site of the 14th Winter Olympics.
