Altena Castle is located on a spur overhanging the town of the same name in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia in the western part of Germany. The castle was founded in 1108 by the sons of Count Berg, Adolf and Eberhard, who received these lands from Kaiser Heinrich V for their loyal service.
