Webcam Aktau - Lower district in the 14th district
In 1958, uranium mills were built on the site of present-day Aktau, naming the settlement Melovoye (Melovoye) after the bay on which it stood. After the development of uranium deposits began, the settlement was closed and renamed Guryev-20 (Guryev-20). In 1963 its closed status was revoked, the status of the city was renewed, and the name was changed to Aktau. However, in 1964 another name, Shevchenko(Shevchenko), was given, this Ukrainian name of the city may have been given due to the large number of Ukrainian workers who settled in the city.
Their descendants are easily identified to this day by surnames ending in "-enko." After the collapse of the Soviet Union and Kazakhstan's independence, the name Aktau was restored in 1991, but the city's airport still retains SCO as its IATA code. Aktau was once a nuclear power plant site. BN-350 FBR opened in 1973 and closed in 1999.
In addition to producing plutonium, BN-350 was also used to provide power and desalination to supply fresh water to the city. Long-term plans of the Kazakh government include the construction of a new nuclear power plant to be built near the current one. The current plant is not considered powerful enough to provide the fresh water and power needed at this time, and power outages are common.
