The Masuria Lakes are the largest lake system in Poland. The lakes are located in the northeastern part of Poland. The area is a majestic landscape: hills, forests, farms and lakes connected by a whole network of canals, channels and rivers. There are 45 lakes, 12 canals and 8 rivers - it is the most extensive water system in Europe.
This area is extremely popular with fans of sailing and paddling - on the shores of the lakes tourists hike, fish and ride mountain bikes.
The largest lake is Snyardvy, with an area of 110 square kilometers. Many rare animals and plants are found here. There are several nature reserves on the lake including the reserve of Lake Luknaio with the largest mute swan nursery in Central Europe. Here you can also see other wonderful birds - herons, pipits and the rarest black storks, as well as raptors - eagles, kites and hawks.
On the territory of the lakes is Augustow Forest - one of the largest in Poland, mostly old pines and spruces grow here. In addition to birds there live bison, moose, wild boars, wolves and beavers. The town of Augustów is a popular destination for visitors to the lakes, as you can head in either direction from here.
