Goiania, the capital of the state of Goias in central Brazil, is a modern, bustling city located on a fertile plain where numerous rivers meet. The most important river is the Meia Ponte. Goiânia is 209 km from Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, 1338 km from Rio de Janeiro, 926 km from São Paulo, and 906 km from Belo Horizonte.
Goiânia was founded on October 24, 1933 by Pedro Ludovico, governor of the state of Goiás. The city is connected by BR 060 to the capital Brasilia; the road was recently widened to four lanes, and to São Paulo by BR 153.
Approximately 30% of Goiânia's urban area is taken up by parks. Trees decorate the streets and parks for the convenience of residents. Among the parks, Bosque do Buritis is famous, covering an area of 140,000 square meters, where the main attractions are the different varieties of buriti, a kind of palm tree on which yellow fruits grow.
The modern urban design of Goyania, known as the "capital of the spring," immediately included parkland. The accelerated growth of the city could have disrupted the original idea, but the authorities actively discouraged attempts to develop the park areas, and planning construction was strictly in accordance with the original idea, which was to preserve the forested area.
