Itajaí (port. Itajaí) is a city and municipality in Brazil, part of the state of Santa Catarina. Part of the Val do Itajaí mesoregion. It is part of the economic-statistical micro-region Itajaí. The municipality covers an area of 289 km². It is the center of the urban agglomeration of Foz do Rio Itajai.
The city of Itajai, the center of the municipality of Itajai, has the seaport of Itajai on the Atlantic Ocean outlet. The city is also home to the headquarters of Brazil's largest fishing port and the largest private university in the country, Vale do Itajai (port. Vale do Itajai).
In 1750, Portuguese colonists arriving from Madeira and the Azores settled in this region. In 1823 a village was formed here and on March 31, 1833 a county was created.
The city was founded on June 15, 1860.
The colonization of European origin in Itajai began in 1658. At the end of the nineteenth century, a large number of German settlers and Italian immigrants arrived in the town.
In the municipality of Itajai there were quite often large floods. In 1880 and 1911 recorded significant floods in Itajai, but the most famous floods occurred in 1983 and 1984. November 22, 2008 was the most catastrophic flood so far (it declared more than ninety percent of the municipality). On September 9, 2011, again the waters of the Itajai-Ashu and Itajai-Mirin rivers flooded the city, occupying seventy percent of its territory.
