Saransk is the central urban settlement of the Republic of Mordovia. A few years ago, this town was not considered attractive for travelers, and there were very few people willing to visit it for tourist purposes. But today everything has changed: Saransk is being actively ennobled and transformed.
The rapid development of the city began after it was announced in 2012 that this unremarkable regional center may host the soccer World Cup in 2018. Having become a candidate of such magnitude, Saransk seems to have become younger. They began to actively build sports stadiums on its territory, ancient architectural and sculptural monuments were restored, very old and dilapidated buildings were demolished and replaced with new and modern ones. It should be noted that the sports infrastructure in Saransk has always been at a high level, but there were very few good cultural and leisure facilities.
Today the local authorities have eliminated this defect. While the city is actively being built up, it is not done thoughtlessly: the exterior and interior of modern buildings always have the features of traditional national style. And this beauty is worth seeing!
In historical documents the year of foundation of Saransk is listed as 1641.
It is known that originally it was not even a full-fledged settlement, but elevated wooden fortress built between Belgorod and Simbirsk. Saransk is famous for its rich history. In the 70s of the 17th century the fortress walls at the edge of the country were seized by Stenka Razin, a hundred years later Yemelyan Pugachev came here. But all this time Saransk wore a military-protective status.
