The town and center of the municipality of the same name Gradačac is located on the river Gradašnica, in the intermountain. It is surrounded by the hills of Trebava and Maevica, near which there are two lakes - Vidara and Hazna. In the warm season, the town is immersed in dense vegetation.
Gradachac is known for its commercial activities: in its vicinity, plums have been grown since ancient times. Every year a large international fair is held here. The food, chemical, engineering and textile industries are also successfully operating here.
The first mention of the town called Gračac dates back to 1465. Some 46 years later it was annexed to the Ottoman Empire. Nahia with the same name was mentioned in the documents of 1533, the same name kadiluk in the annals of 1634.
At the beginning of the 18th century, the settlement was transformed into a town (palank). In 1710 it housed the military administration. Their brightest representatives were the captains of the Gradaščević family, who ruled the town. The most famous of this dynasty was considered to be Hussein the Captain, who in 1831 led the uprising. He was widely known as the "Dragon of Bosnia".
Within the boundaries of the city, by that time, there was a fortress surrounded by powerful walls. They were built over 56 years from 1765 to 1821. On the site of the former Roman tower, the Hussein-captain erected a 22-meter tower. Later, in 1826 a mosque was built.
During the Yugoslav period the town was part of the Vrbas Banovina, later the Croatian Banovina. After the end of World War II it was transformed into the administrative center of the municipality of the same name.
Hradacac was severely damaged during the Bosnian war. Many of its buildings were destroyed or badly damaged as the area was frequently shelled by the Serbian army. Its military wanted to reunite the two parts of Republika Srpska, between which there was a town on a narrow territory. After the end of the war, it became part of the Tuzla canton.
Gradac is famous for its healing springs. Back in 1882, the Ilidzha medical center was opened there. Here, as before, for the treatment of local water is used, the temperature of which is 29.3 ° C. It is located at a depth of 286 meters. The medical center is actually a large spa, which offers various types of water procedures.
Hradachac Castle is located in the upper part of town on a high hill. The structure has survived to the present time in good condition. Now it is privately owned and only partially accessible. On its territory, which offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area, there is a restaurant with traditional cuisine.
