Paleochora is a small town in Greece, located in the southwest of Crete, on the Libyan Sea coast, 77 kilometers south of Chania and 200 kilometers west of Heraklion. The administrative center of the community (dima) of Candanos-Selino in the peripheral unit of Chania in the periphery of Crete. The population is 1675 inhabitants according to the census of 2011.
In Paleochora there are ruins of a Venetian fortress, built between 1278-1279 by General Marino Gredenigo. The fort, named Fortress of Selino, was destroyed in 1332 by the rebellious Cretans and rebuilt by the Venetians in 1335. In 1539 the fort was destroyed by the Mediterranean pirate Hayreddin Barbarossa and rebuilt in 1595.

With the beginning of the occupation of Greece by the Ottoman Empire and the capture of the island in 1645, the fortress of Selino was seized and rebuilt by the Turks, before being destroyed for the third time in 1653. The recolonization of Paleochora began only in 1866. It is believed that Paleochora was rebuilt next to the ruins of the ancient city of Calamidi.
