Yingxiu is a city in the south of Wenchuan County, northwestern Sichuan Province. It is located in the southern part of Tibetan Ngawa and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, and is on the road to Jiuzhaigou Valley, Wolong and the Xigong Mountains.
They are located 47 kilometers south of the county's urban center and only 14 kilometers west of Dujiangyan City.
Yingxiu was the epicenter and one of the hardest hit areas of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake: 80% of the city was destroyed and 5,462 people were killed. The collapsed Xuankou High School was one of the most memorable images of the disaster and is now part of a memorial complex.
Kindness Square, a monument built by the Chinese government at the epicenter of the earthquake, contains a huge boulder lying beneath the surface and surrounded by a moat. A plaque in Chinese and English reads, "Kindness Square: Before the earthquake, it was an arable land.
